More Than English Review

This year i really enjoyed Model United Nations at More Than English, because it gave me the chance to challenge myself to use my english in a very high pressure environment. I had to research a country, right a position paper stating my countries (Romania) opinion on Economic Migrants and debate on this topic with other delegations.
The biggest challenge I had to face this year was my other Get Ahead Option - Leadership Business Challenge. We had to come up with a smoothie brand including the name, marketing, recipes and finally selling the smoothies to other students and staff.
I had such a great time! I love More Than English

Review of More Than English

I want to talk about More than English positive things. The first thing when you arrive is the special castle. It is when you open the door you see sofas and armchairs. Then there are people who wear green T-shirts, these are the staffs. Let’s go swimming in the swimming pool. Over the swimming pool there is a beautiful glass- tunnel. Now we have to go to the dinner the chef is Paul. He cooks excellent. After dinner we have activities, we can choose from football and handball. I think I choose football. Our staff: Ania, Jacob, Lauren, Seth, Valentina explain the game to us. Tomorrow we have three lessons. One lesson is sixty minutes. The teachers are Bethan, Calvin, Emma, Ian, Jai, Louise, Lucy and Matt. The bedrooms are very funny because there is Pirate and Spitfire etc. The rules are to go to sleep at 10.30pm don’t cheat, don’t shout out. And the Get Ahead you can choose before you arrive at Moor Park School. You can choose between football, tennis and golf.

Amazing!

I have attended More Than English for 3 summers now and I have to say it's amazing. The varied mix of nationalities is excellent. I'm a British teenager who lives in Herefordshire, very close to Ludlow (about 5km actually), but I felt like I was a long way from home whilst staying here.

The English lessons are brilliant. I was in a class with very high level English speakers but this didn't stop everyone from learning new things. I particularly enjoyed that our teacher taught British slang words to the students, it gave everyone a real representation of English as a language. I learnt a lot myself, which not only surprised me but helped me in my education after the summer.

It is definitely worth what you pay! It looks intense on paper and it sometimes can be, but you're never bored.

A swimming pool on site, what more could you ask for? The facilities are outstanding however the only concern I had was that the rooms are a little childish, obviously I don't expect the walls to be painted especially for us, but it would be nice if we had timetables up in the rooms, clocks and maybe some posters of famous British things such as Doctor Who or Harry Potter. It did get quite cold in some of the rooms as well. Oh, and there's WiFi!!

FOOD! My favourite thing. The food was diverse and delicious. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the chef accommodated to my dietary requirements and there was some excellent vegan and vegetarian options. The BBQ's we had outside were cool and were stereotypically British with one being rained off! The breakfasts were great with a full English being offered alongside a continental breakfast.

There was a diverse range of activities. I really enjoyed the swimming because we could play with inflatable things and water polo was really fun - it was great that the staff got involved as well! We built slip 'n' slide one afternoon which was great because we got to be creative and get soaked at the same time. The special activities were great, zorb football was fun and we all got a great night's sleep afterwards.

The only key criticism I have would be that there isn't much free time. I was tired quite a lot of the time and needed maybe just an hour or two to relax and watch some TV or play card games with my new international friends! Obviously some people might find that boring but 1 evening a week would be enough.

Excelente Escola de Verão

Meu filho aproveitou muito o período em que esteve na More Than English, desde o aeroporto às viagens o staff foi muito presente e organizado. David e Claire estavam sempre disponíveis para tirar dúvidas e passar informações sobre a situação dele. As atividades ocorriam a todo o tempo, permitindo uma completa interação com os outros estudantes.

More than English

The school building itself is very massive. It is very impressive from the inside and from the outside. It is ancient but that is only fascinating. The garden is huge and very beautiful. There evening is a forest next to the school which I find very great because I love the forest in general.

For the accommodation I must say it isn't perfect. the rooms are great but I must say that the beds are uncomfortable, but I have changed my bed and now it's perfect.

To turn to the positive side the lessons in the morning are fun. My teacher is nice and the lessons are various. You have three lessons of English every morning and between every lesson there's a break.

After lunch you do an activity that you choose with your parents at home. You can choose sports (tennis, dance or football) or something like acting or film. You could also have English lesson in PET or speech making. I chose intensive English and I talked more than in the morning as there are less students (10 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon), there are only 2 so it feels like an individual lesson.

In this camp there are lots of students from other countries. This year were sixteen nationalities in total. You have a few students from your country but more from others. With your friends you practice English as well as you learn their native language and you can teach them some of theirs. It is interesting to learn new things from which you thought very different.

Every week there is one full-day excursion and one half-day. I'm here for my second day so I am excited to go to London and Oxford.

All in all, I can say that I had a great time up to this point. I met nice people, did great activities and had fun in the lessons (which hasn't happened for years!)

Summer school

The place is quite cool and the bedrooms are huge but the showers are quite little and that’s hard to wash ourselves.

The English lessons are really great, we talk a lot which an important thing when we learn a language. Also, we’retalking about interesting stuff like eating crickets, live octopus and intimate parts of a pig.

For the moment I chose speech making and this option is pretty hilarious. We’re learning how to speak in front of people and my classmates are really open-minded and talkative (as is the teacher).

Also the teenagers in this campus are coming from so many countries. That’s great and it’s really interesting to talk with them. I keep practicing my English which is my objective for this summercamp.

In this summer camp the great thing is that we reall have the choice about activities and excursions. We can choose whatever we want in a large option of really cool activities. We can have fun in all circumstances!

My camp experience

I will start talking about the campus. There are lots of green fields and forests where we can run. There are also lots of pitches where we can play fun games. The campus is very spacious and allows the campers to play many games.

The accommodation is very colourful, the rooms are big and the campers feel like home. The beds are comfortable and clean, but the showers are small.

Everyday in the morning we have Core English which is divided into three parts. We learn new things and our English gets better. Also we have lots of fun so most campers enjoy English classes.

Campers can also pick Get Ahead options like speech, film, drama and sports. So the campers have the choice to pick what they like and do it.

We meet new people from new countries and learn new foods, languages, cultures and much more. There is British food at camp but I wish there was more.

Finally I think More than English is an amazing camp where campers learn while having fun and discovering new cultures.

Ludlow summer school

I really like the school, it has a great view. I like my room, it is quite small but it's nice. The school looks like Harry Potter, it's amazing because in Harry Potter you also go upstairs to the residence. The campus is so big, with lots of space and so many activities (swimming, football, tennis).

The activities are amazing because you can go to London, Oxford and other sights that you wouldn't visit with your family. My favourite evening was the mocktails and paintball.

We have a nice, funny teacher. Joanna teaches us very well, we have learned a lot of English. My English is much better than before I came here because I went to other summer camps in Spain but there were only Spanish people so I only spoke in English with the teachers. But in More than English I speak English to real English people and put my English in practice. For example, when go to a shop I talk with the shopkeeper and she responds to me. It's difficult but I can do it! In one week you are accustomed to talking in English.

For get Ahead I did football and tennis, I really liked it. I played these sports when I was a kid, the teachers were so funny and they play with you.

As for the food, the food is so different because in Spain we eat much later and here we eat so early. So, sometimes I need a snack later. My favourite food was chicken kiev. Next year I would to have more meat, like steak.

I would like to come again, but next time I want to come for 3 or 4 weeks!

More Than English

Campus.
For three weeks I lived on a beautiful campus with a large sports ground and a swimming pool. From our dormitories it took a two minute walk to our classrooms. Depending on the weather, we often spend our breaks outside.
Accommodation.
Our dormitories are really large. I share my room with five other girls. It would be better if there were wardrobes. In my opinion the bathrooms could be cleaner, but it is understandable that you cannot keep everything clean when there are 30 girls to shower, brush their teeth and etc.
Food.
Our breakfast always consists of typical English foods like scrambled eggs and bacon. For lunch and dinner we often have international foods sometimes very spicy, curry or tortilla wraps, sometimes pasta with tomato and olives. For me as a vegan, it took a while to make the stuff understand what I can eat and what I can't. But after a few days I received amazing food.
Core English.
My core English lessons have probably been the best lessons I have ever had. They were different, because we talked about topics like self actualization, sustainability and meditation. In other words things they could help us to improve our life quality. We had lots of fun with our teacher Jay while we were collecting ideas for film projects, poems, stories and discussions.
Get ahead.
I chose Shakespeare as my get ahead option. Four times a week we discovered the dark, medieval world of Macbeth. We spent our time with reading, watching, acting and the interpretation of the play, I really enjoyed it.
International experience. The experience I made with people from all around the world is an experience I will never forget. I was able to talk to students with a total of 16 nationalities and make friends with many of them. We will definitely stay in contact with each other.
All in all. I hope I have the opportunity to come back next year, because those three weeks I spent in MTE summer school are unforgettable.
